Andrew L. Novinger is the loop Area Operations Manager for Smithereen Pest Managment.

Andy began his career at Smithereen in 2005 as Technical Director and was responsible for all aspects of technical training and consultation for the existing technicians, along with training all new employees and sales personnel. Andy utilizes all aspects of his background by consulting on new and existing accounts with Smithereen employees and customers. Other aspects of his duties entail evaluating new protocols, procedures and materials along with evaluating and developing treatment protocols and procedures.

Andy completed his undergraduate studies in 1995 at Eastern Illinois University in Charleston, IL earning a Bachelor of Science with a major in Zoology and a minor in Chemistry. While pursuing his undergraduate degree, Andy was a Research Assistant at Eastern Illinois University. Andy furthered his education by earning a Master’s of Science in Biology in 2002 from Loyola University with a specialization in Entomology. Andy’s graduate thesis was “A Taxonomic Study of the Eugnamptine Weevils of the La Selva Biological Station in Costa Rica”. While completing his Masters at Loyola University, Andy was a Graduate Research Assistant in their Biology Department. Most recently, Andy completed management training sponsored by MRA, The Management Association, Inc.

Andy’s prior teaching experience further builds upon his success at Smithereen. Andy enhanced his graduate studies at Loyola University as a Graduate Teaching Assistant and was also a part time instructor at College of Lake County, educating students in Entomology and Environmental Biology.

Andy’s background in Zoology from Eastern Illinois University afforded him the opportunity to assume the role of “Keeper-Small Mammal House/Fragile Kingdom”, at the Brookfield Zoo in Brookfield Ill. from 1997-2001. In 2001 Andy was promoted to “Keeper-Habitat Africa II” where he was responsible for the care of hoof stock, reptile, invertebrate, fish and bird species.

In the fall of 2001 Andy began the next phase of his career as a “Plant Protection and Quarantine Officer”, for the U.S. Department of Agriculture in Chicago, IL. Andy was responsible for enforcing federal laws and regulations.

For two and a half years, beginning in May of 2002, Andy assumed the roles and responsibilities as an “Assistant Entomologist” for Northwest Mosquito Abatement District, in Wheeling, IL. Responsibilities included all aspects of sampling and surveillance to determine the density, distribution and species make-up of mosquito populations.

Prior to joining Smithereen Andy ventured to Plantation, FL in October of 2004 to assume duties as a “Staff Entomologist” for a start up pest control service, Skeeter Control, (Division of Critter Control).

Andy’s professional activities include: Volunteering at The Field Museum, Division of Insects in Chicago; Past President of the Biology Graduate Student Association; along with memberships in the Entomological Society of America; Beta Beta Beta National Biological Honor Society; Alpha Epsilon Delta Pre-Medical Honor Society; American Mosquito Control Association; Illinois Mosquito and Vector Control Association and Greater Chicago Pest Management Association. Andy also holds Pesticide Certification, Application (Insect and Rodents).
